Covid Flowers
Kay van Dyk & Lisa Matthys
Mixed media
Originally exhibited on a fence shared by neighbours Lisa Matthys and Kay van Dyk, these Covid Flowers were made during lockdown. Experimenting with every day materials unable to be recycled during this time, and in combination with what they had at hand, they shared their impulse to make.
Some pieces were collaborative and so passed back and forth over the fence during construction. Others were made in isolation.
At the centre of all this activity is Matthys and van Dyk’s engagement in the process and joy of making and the activation of a shared meeting space.
About
As a maker with a contemporary jewellery background Kay van Dyk is interested in the relationship between objects and the body, and the spaces that these objects occupy. Her current practice is based around the use of found objects and materials to design and make work that conceptually responds to the body and the domestic environment.

Artist Lisa Matthys has made a home and studio in her historic cottage in central Nelson. She works as a painter and maker of objects. These mixed media objects use natural and found materials and are sometimes described as quirky. Matthys work often reflects autobiographical events in her life, as shown in her most recent Covid Flowers collaboration with Kay van Dyk. “I will always remember this ‘lockdown’ period, not least because of the creativity Kay and I shared during what was such a bizarre time in my life”.
